The art of lauhala hand weaving has been part of the Hawaiian culture for many generations. Lauhala is obtained from the Pandanus or Hala tree. Lau means 'leaf' in Hawaiian. Therefore, lauhala is the leaf of the hala tree. The Hala tree has leaves that are long and ribbon-like. Several processes goes into making the hala leaves ready for weaving. The thorn like spikes are first removed, then the leaf blade is wash and dried in the sun, before it can be used.
